The role of a heat exchanger varies depending on the season.
In winter, its operation is particularly efficient: it recovers heat from the stale (exhaust) air and transfers it to the incoming fresh air. Unlike a single-flow ventilation system (which simply expels heat), this system minimizes heat loss and significantly reduces the home’s energy consumption.
During the summer day: If the outdoor air is warmer than the indoor air, the double-flow heat recovery ventilation (MVHR) system circulates fresh air through the heat exchanger to cool it before it enters the home.
At night in summer: Conversely, as soon as the outdoor temperature becomes cooler than the indoor temperature, the fresh air bypasses the exchanger to take direct advantage of this natural coolness. This smart system only works if the MVHR unit is equipped with a bypass (or summer bypass). Be sure to check this feature in the technical specifications before purchasing.
